Guide to the 3 Vallées from Méribel: where to start?

Méribel sits at the heart of the 3 Vallées, the world’s largest linked ski area: 600 km of pistes, 7 resorts and 160 lifts. With that much terrain, the real question isn’t “where to ski?” but “where to start?”. This guide gives you the right moves for your level, the lift pass that suits you and the easy routes to explore the neighbouring valleys without stress. Written by the INTERSPORT Méribel team, who have been equipping skiers at the foot of the slopes for 17 years.

The 3 Vallées at a glance: one ski area, seven resorts

The 3 Vallées link Courchevel, Méribel, Brides-les-Bains, Les Menuires, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, Val Thorens and Orelle on a single lift pass. Méribel sits in the middle, which makes it the best gateway: from the resort you can reach Courchevel in about 15 minutes, Les Menuires in 20 and Val Thorens in around 35.

Which Méribel district should you choose?

The resort is spread over five districts. Your starting point changes how quickly you reach the slopes, so choose according to your plans.

Where to start, depending on your level

The golden rule: start in the Méribel sector, master its pistes, then open up to the neighbouring resorts. These are the starting points we recommend to our customers every week.

You’re a beginner: Méribel’s green runs

Several areas are designed for first turns, away from the fast skiers.

  • Piste des Animaux (green), Altiport/Rhodos sector: gentle slope, ideal for first descents. Access via the Dent de Burgin chairlift.
  • Piste Inuit (green), same sector: the fun zone of the Inuit park, gentle slope.
  • Yéti Park (green), in Mottaret: an area reserved for beginners, reached from the first stop of the Combes chairlift. Don’t miss the tunnels!
  • Truite and Perdrix (green): two easy links between Méribel Centre and Mottaret, to take at your own pace.

Our tip: the Mini-pass, a reduced-price lift pass designed for learning, covers a sector of green and blue pistes from Brides-les-Bains (600 m) to Méribel-Mottaret (1,750 m). No need to pay for the whole ski area for your first days. Consider ski lessons too: instructors know the best spots to progress.

You’re comfortable on blue runs: go exploring

This is the number one asset of the 3 Vallées: four half-day outings on easy blue pistes let you leave Méribel without ever going beyond your level.

Each loop takes half a day. Keep an eye on the time of the last return: the lifts close in the late afternoon and a return can’t be improvised.

You ski fast and well: the legendary pistes

Méribel hosted the women’s events of the 1992 Albertville Olympic Games and the World Cup finals in 2015 and 2022. Its red and black pistes have character.

  • Combe du Vallon (red): 3 km and more than 1,000 m of vertical drop, one of the longest pistes in the 3 Vallées. Reached by the Mont Vallon gondola (2,952 m), north-facing for snow that holds.
  • Roc de Fer (red): 2.5 km, the 2015 World Cup finals piste. Access via the Olympic chairlift.
  • Mauduit (red): more than 1,000 m of vertical drop, from the Saulire.
  • La Face (black): the 1992 Olympic Games piste.
  • Bartavelle and Campagnol (black): demanding slopes in a high-mountain setting.

Looking for more thrills on the other side of the Saulire? Courchevel has the Grand Couloir and the Couloir Tournier, among the steepest pistes in the 3 Vallées. For off-piste or the Gébroulaz glacier, go with a high-mountain guide.

Which lift pass should you choose to discover the 3 Vallées?

Three options cover most stays: the Méribel pass (about 150 km of pistes), the 3 Vallées pass (600 km) and the Mini-pass for learning. If you plan at least one outing to Courchevel, Les Menuires or Val Thorens, the 3 Vallées pass is the one to take.

Planning your stay in Méribel

Season dates

The Méribel ski area opens on 5 December 2026 and closes on 18 April 2027. The resort’s altitude and exposure provide good natural snow cover, with a large part of the area lying above 1,800 m.

Getting to Méribel

  • By train: Moûtiers-Salins-Brides-les-Bains station, then an Altibus shuttle or a taxi to the resort.
  • By air: Geneva, Lyon Saint-Exupéry, Grenoble or Chambéry airports.
  • On site: free shuttle buses serve the different districts of Méribel, handy for reaching the slopes without a car.

Gear: book before you go up

Renting your gear in advance avoids the wait on arrival day and guarantees the model you want. In our INTERSPORT shops you book online and pick up your skis as close to the slopes as possible, in Méribel Centre, Mottaret or Méribel 1600. At the Le Plateau shop, for example, gear can be picked up from 3 p.m. the day before.

One detail that changes everything: boots. Our SOS Sore Feet service offers a free postural assessment by a trained fitter and Vacuum Fit heat-moulded liners, so you can ski pain-free all week. Discover our services

Good habits before hitting the slopes

  • Download the piste map (PDF) or the 3 Vallées app: it shows real-time opening of pistes and lifts.
  • Note the time of the last return before any outing to another valley.
  • Wear a helmet, apply sunscreen and bring suitable goggles: the sun at altitude is strong.
  • Off-piste and glaciers: only with a high-mountain guide, carrying an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe.

Frequently asked questions

When does the Méribel ski area open in 2026-2027?

The Méribel ski area opens on 5 December 2026 and closes on 18 April 2027.

Do I need a 3 Vallées pass or a Méribel pass?

The Méribel pass (about 150 km of pistes) is enough if you stay within the resort. As soon as you want to reach Courchevel, Les Menuires, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville or Val Thorens, take the 3 Vallées pass (600 km). Beginners can start with the Mini-pass.

Can I reach Val Thorens from Méribel if I’m not an expert?

It depends on your level and the weather. Val Thorens is about 35 minutes from Méribel according to Méribel Tourisme. For a first outing, the simplest easy blue-run route links Mottaret to Les Menuires; ask an instructor for advice before going further, and set off early to keep a margin for the return.

Which Méribel district should I choose to ski straight from my accommodation?

Méribel-Mottaret (1,750 m) is the highest and most ski-focused district, with direct access to Les Menuires and Val Thorens. Méribel Les Hauts (1,600 m) also offers direct access to the pistes. Our INTERSPORT shops are in Méribel Centre, Mottaret and Méribel 1600, at the foot of the slopes.

Is the resort suitable for families?

Yes: Méribel holds the Famille Plus label. The Family Flex pass lets the whole family ski at the child price, and dedicated green runs such as Yéti Park let younger skiers progress safely.

Can I rent my ski gear in Méribel before I arrive?

Yes. You can book online in one of our 6 INTERSPORT shops in Méribel and Mottaret, then pick up your skis, boots or snowboard directly on site. Book my gear
